Zeno of Citium Stoic Philosopher

Up until a couple of weeks ago I would have agreed that stoic related to being free from passion or unmoved by joy or grief, even cold or shut down.
I now have a new appreciation of that word having been reading A Guide to the Good Life by William Braxton Irvine, which provides a different view.

“Stoicism, contrary to what is more commony seen today, is far from being a philosophy of cold emotional detachment, Stoicism is a practical philosophy that recognizes a few consistent elements of reality. The world is always changing, we have only limited control or influence over the world around us, and becoming too attached to certain situations is likely to cause us great pain. By recognizing these realities, we can reduce or eliminate major negative emotions, and experience joy in our daily lives more often. “

Essentially there is only one way to contentment; that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our direct influence, as stoicism is a defined by action, not words. Solving our own problems, not complaining about others.
